Behavioral Health Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS)

Pikes Peak State College's Bachelor of Applied Science will help you open new doors in your career. This degree will give you opportunities to earn higher wages, have more career choices, and chances to specialize in areas that are meaningful to you. Moving yourself up the career ladder will also allow you to attain leadership roles and create a long-term career plan for your continued success. With a BAS in Behavioral Health, you can easily transfer to any graduate school for counseling, social work, psychology, and more!

 

The Behavioral Health BAS program has special admission requirements and an additional application. 

You must have an associate degree before entering this BAS program.

Depending on the type of associate degree you have, there are a few options for getting started in this program.

How to Apply

Option 1: Continue to Build On Your PPSC Behavioral Health AAS Degree

If you already have a Behavioral Health Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree from PPSC or one of the other schools in the Colorado Community College System, with an emphasis in either Mental Health & Social Work or Addiction Recovery, you are eligible to continue to the Behavioral Health BAS program. 

Behavioral Health Info Sessions are held virtually every third Thursday of the month at 12pm.

Submit your admission application to Pikes Peak State College. You must have a Student ID Number (S#) to apply for the Behavioral Health BAS program. 

If you do not have an AAS from the Behavioral Health Department at PPSC, you must submit your unofficial transcripts to two locations:

  1. Email transcripts to BehavioralHealth@pikespeak.edu with your last name and “BAS application transcripts” in the subject line.
  2. Order and submit your official transcripts from all previous college classes to our Records Department.

Please read the BAS Student Handbook before starting the Behavioral Health BAS application.

  • The application will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. Please ensure that you have adequate time to complete this application, as only one form may be submitted. If you leave this form part way through, your progress will be lost.
  • Your application to the Behavioral Health BAS program will not be considered unless you complete steps 1-3. If any of steps 1-3 are missing, you will not be contacted. 

Submit the Behavioral Health BAS Application

Attend a virtual or in-person behavioral health orientation in the spring or the fall. To find the next available orientation date, visit the Behavioral Health Orientation course in D2L.

To access D2L, go to myPikesPeak Portal and locate the myCourses (D2L) card on the home page. Once in D2L, you will see the orientation as an option.

Option 2: Bridge Your General AA, AS, or AAS with Additional Pre-Requisite Courses

If you have a general Associate of Arts (AA), Associate of Science (AS) or Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree, you are eligible to enter the Behavioral Health BAS program after taking some additional prerequisite courses.
 
For your BAS degree, you can either choose a concentration in Mental Health and Wellness or Addiction Recovery.
The concentration you choose will determine which prerequisite courses you need to take.

You must complete the following required prerequisite and foundation courses before you can apply for the BAS program: 

  • PSY 1001 - General Psychology (3 credits) GT-SS3
  • PSY 1002 - General Psychology (3 credits) GT-SS3
  • ENG 1021 - English Composition I (3 credits) GT-CO1
  • MAT 1260 - Introduction to Statistics (3 credits) GT-MA1
  • BEH 1001 - Mental Health Crisis and Intervention: Preparedness and Empathy (3 credits) 
  • PTE 1010 - Introduction to Behavioral Health Care and Wellness (3 credits) 
  • PSY 2440 - Human Growth & Development (3 credits) GT-SS3
  • SWK 1100 - Social Welfare and Community Agencies (3 credits with Service Learning) 

Bridge Core Coursework

  • BEH 1020 - Cultural Competence in Behavioral Health (1.5 credits) 
  • BEH 1030 - Behavioral Health Case Management and Clinical Documentation (1 credit) 
  • BEH 2001 - Mental Health Crisis and Intervention: Advocacy, Intervention, and Resilience (3 credits) 
  • BEH 2030 - Applied Therapeutic Communication Skills (3 credits)

After all required prerequisite courses have been completed, you may apply to the Behavioral Health BAS program.

  • Your application will be submitted electronically. 

The application will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. Please ensure that you have adequate time to complete this application, as only one form may be submitted. If you leave this form part way through, your progress will be lost.

Once prerequisite and bridge core classes are completed, you will be fully integrated into the BAS program. Congratulations on your new journey and welcome to the program!

  • Complete a Behavioral Health Orientation
    • Attend a virtual or in-person behavioral health orientation in the spring or the fall. To find the next available orientation date, visit the Behavioral Health Orientation course in D2L.
    • To access D2L, go to myPikesPeak Portal and locate the myCourses (D2L) card on the home page. Once in D2L, you will see the orientation as an option.

Addiction Recovery Emphasis

You must complete the following required prerequisite and foundation courses before you can apply for the BAS program: 

  • PSY 1001 - General Psychology (3 credits) GT-SS3
  • ENG 1021 - English Composition I (3 credits) GT-CO1

  • PSY 2440 - Human Growth & Development (3 credits) GT-SS3
  • SWK 1100 - Social Welfare and Community Agencies (3 credits with Service Learning) 
  • SOC 2018 - Sociology of Diversity (3 credits)

In addition, the Behavioral Health Administration requires completion of the 2000 level CSL courses before taking CSL classes in the BAS program. The following courses should be completed in sequence. If you already have your Certified Addiction Technician (CAT), you may submit a Prior Learning Assessment form to receive credit for those courses:

  • CSL 2046 - Ethical Practice in Addiction Treatment (1 credit)
  • CSL 2061 - Case Conceptualization and Documentation (1 credit)
  • CSL 2051 - Pharmacology I for Addiction Counselors (1 credit)
  • CSL 2052 - Pharmacology II for Addiction Counselors (1 credit)
  • CSL 2053 – Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (1 credit)
  • CSL 2069 - Principles of Addiction (1.5 credits)
  • CSL 2068 - Addiction Counseling Skills (1.5 credits)
  • CSL 2050 - Motivational Interviewing I (1.5 credits)
  • CSL 2058 - Group Counseling Skills (1.5 credits)
  • CSL 2065 - Culturally Informed Treatment (1 credit)
  • CSL 2054 - Trauma Informed Care (1 credit)
  • CSL 2055 – Infectious Diseases for Addiction Counselors (1)
  • CSL 2056 - Co-Occurring Disorders (1 credit)
  • CSL 2048 - Advanced Case Conceptualization (1 credit)
  • CSL 2059 –Advanced Professional & Ethical Practice (1 credit)
