Do YOU need a placement test?

Not every student needs to take the placement test! Refer to the Testing Center website for more information. Don't panic...prepare!

We want to make sure you begin your experience at PPSC on the right track, by helping you place into the appropriate level English and mathematics courses.

Placement test preparation resources below are available to help you review material that you have learned in the past, but may have forgotten over time.

TIPS FOR TACKLING THE PLACEMENT TEST

  • Stay positive
  • Breathe!
  • Do not pay attention to others around you – focus on the test
  • Read all directions thoroughly
  • Read the whole question carefully, and pay attention to details
  • Eat a mint when you study and eat a mint during the test – your sense of smell is strongly tied to memory!
  • Review the material that you will be tested over

  • Think of answers on your own before reading the choices
  • Eliminate answers you know are not correct
  • Make an educated guess if there is no penalty
  • Consider each answer as an individual true-false question
  • Be wary of “all of the above” or “none of the above” options
  • Remember, you are often looking for the BEST answer, not simply the right answer

  • Not timed, so work at your own pace!
  • Double, triple, quadruple-check your work!
  • Use scrap paper
  • Know your arithmetic. You will not have a calculator available for this section!
  • Break up the subjects if you feel overwhelmed; math on one day, English on another
  • Familiarize yourself with the basic functions of a computer

These review resources are not designed to replace actual classes or to teach new material. The Learning Commons does not help students place into or out of any PPSC course, but instead helps students review material in an effort to start their coursework at our college in classes that are appropriate to their background, knowledge, and skills.
