Associate of Science (A.S) - The Associate of Science degree is designed for students who want an emphasis in natural sciences, mathematics, computer science, pre-engineering, and allied health and intend to transfer to four-year colleges and universities.
Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S) - The two-year AAS degree provides career skills to enable students to enter the job market after graduation, retrain in a new career, or upgrade employments skills. Occupational courses are designed to meet these needs instead of transferring to four-year institutions; however, many four-year institutions accept some of these courses.

Studying Allied Health at PPSC offers a variety of classes that will allow you to pursue advanced degrees in the healthcare field. Here are just a few that you may take, depending on if the Associate of Science (AS) or the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) is chosen. It is recommended that you work with your advisor (or faculty advisor) to choose the classes that fit based on your needs.
Introduces the anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and drug therapy of the immune, musculoskeletal, and digestive systems. A discussion of pediatric implications as they relate to clinical physiology will also be covered. The scope of the material is limited to the medical office technology personnel.
Prepares the student to perform the fundamental skills of the nurse aide. Basic nursing skills, restorative services, personal care skills, safety, and emergency care issues are covered. Includes knowledge and/or principles of asepsis, OSHA and HIPAA regulations. Ethical behaviors, cultural sensitivity and principles of mental health will be addressed, as well as patient/resident rights.
Introduces students to pre-hospital emergency care. The topics included in this course are Emergency Medical Services (EMS) systems, well-being of the EMT, communications, documentation, anatomy, airway management, and patient assessment.
Examines the fundamental molecular, cellular and genetic principles characterizing plants and animals. Includes cell structure and function, and the metabolic processes of respiration and photosynthesis, as well as cell reproduction and basic concepts of heredity. The course includes laboratory experience.
Focuses on an integrated study of the human body including the histology, anatomy and physiology of each system. Examines molecular, cellular, and tissue levels of organization plus integuments, skeletal, articulations, muscular and nervous systems. Includes a mandatory hands-on laboratory experience covering microscopy, observations, and dissection. This is the first semester of a two-semester sequence.
Focuses on basic chemistry and measurement, matter, chemical formulas, reactions and equations, stoichiometry. This course covers the development of atomic theory culminating in the use of quantum numbers to determine electron configurations of atoms and the relationship of electron configuration to chemical bond theory. The course includes gases, liquids, and solids and problem-solving skills are emphasized through laboratory experiments.

You will become familiar with the health care system, medical terminology, interpersonal relationships, applying medical clinical skills and assisting patients in their healthcare.
The Allied Health Associate of Science is designed for students who are interested in the field of medical science. This degree prepares the student by offering the first two years of education, then the student can transfer to another school their bachelor's and more.
