Tutoring Introduction

What is Tutoring?

Tutoring is an academic support program offered by the Learning Commons to assist students in learning course content. While primarily focused on providing peer-to-peer tutoring services, the LC may occasionally hire non-student tutors who meet the requirements outlined below, in an effort to meet student academic support need.

Tutor Responsibilities
  • Successfully complete the mandatory College Reading & Learning Association Certified Tutor Training through the Learning Commons
  • Adhere to a regular schedule for the full semester appointment
  • Utilize LC approved tutoring techniques and strategies to assist students with course content
Highly Requested Subjects
  • Accounting - All levels
  • Biology - BIO 111 and above
  • Business - BUS 115 and above
  • Chemistry - CHE 111
  • Computer Information Systems - CIS 115, 118, 145
  • Computer Science - CSC 105, 150, 154, 160
  • Economics - ECO 201
  • English/Writing - ENG 121 and above
  • History - HIS 101, 102
  • Math - MAT 055 and above

  • Further develop your own content knowledge and learning strategies.

  • Become a College Reading & Learning Association Certified Tutor and/or Advanced Certified Tutor.

Apply to be a PPSC Tutor

All Learning Commons tutors must meet the following minimum requirements in order to be considered for a tutoring position:

  • A grade of "A" or "B" in the course(s) for which you wish to be a tutor
  • Minimum overall GPA of 3.0
  • Must attend all Tutor trainings and meetings
To apply, please submit an application to the Learning Commons (below). Applicants are required to submit an unofficial transcript to the LC identifying the courses they wish to tutor. Applicants may also choose to obtain recommendations from faculty in an effort to provide additional content-knowledge endorsement.

Pay Range - All new LC tutors are paid according to the following schedule:

  • Current Student - $12.32 / hr
  • Earned AA/AS degree - $15.00 / hr
  • Earned BA/BS degree - $17.00 / hr
  • Earned Graduate degree - $20.00 / hr

Tutors may be eligible for a raise after each year of consistent employment with the LC and upon obtaining new level of College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) Level 1 and Level 2 Certification.
