Engaging the Community: Pikes Peak State College’s Latin Culture Fashion Show Celebrates Latin Cultures of All Kinds

Hispanic Heritage

Press Release: March 19, 2024

Tuesday, March 19, 2024 – Colorado Springs – Pikes Peak State College (PPSC) is thrilled to announce its Latin Fashion Show taking place on Friday, March 22 from 1-3pm in the Atrium of Centennial Campus (5675 South Academy Blvd., Colorado Springs).

This event is sponsored by PPSC’s Latino Alliance, which celebrates Latino culture and advocates for Latino and Hispanic staff and students to break barriers and to build bridges. PPSC welcomes the public of all ages and the media to join students, faculty, and staff for this vibrant occasion.

Over the semester and holiday break, staff, students, and faculty have curated native outfits from their homelands to showcase in the fashion show. “The aim of this event is not only to celebrate the distinct, individual cultures of Latin and Hispanic peoples but also to educate the public on the uniqueness of each. You cannot take a paintbrush and broad stroke over each culture,” says Bilingual Recruitment & Admissions Specialist, Janae Knipp, faculty sponsor of the Latino Alliance.

Reflecting the diverse student body, with people of Hispanic/Latino heritage making up 24% of PPSC’s population, the college is committed to fostering a culture of inclusivity. The Office of Equity and Inclusion actively champions the success of its Hispanic/Latino students as the college moves forward to become a Hispanic Serving Institution.

We wanted to spotlight PPSC's diverse student body and to emphasize the vibrant diversity among Latino and Hispanic cultures. A goal of this fashion show is to display and enlighten us with the richness and complexity of their own culture's clothing.” says Mindy Martinez, a student member of the Latino Alliance and orchestrator of the event.

All students, staff and faculty are encouraged to join Latino Alliance club meetings, taking place virtually every third Thursday at 12 pm. For more information, please visit pikespeak.edu/latino-alliance. On the webpage, resources can be found for DACA/Undocumented students and English as a Second Language classes.

We encourage the media to join the community in attending the Latin Fashion Show at PPSC to celebrate and appreciate diverse Latino cultures.
