Firefighter 1 Academy

The Fire Academy is a 16-week academy that challenges students through rigorous physical training, skills testing, and academic training and assessment.

PPSC's academy is one of the most recognized academies in Colorado. Our instructors - all of whom are fire service professionals (firefighters, investigators, fire chiefs) - have on average 15 years of on-the-job experience. With more than 400 years of combined practical and technical experience, our instructors prepare students to become tomorrow's fire service professionals.

Those interested in joining the fire service through volunteer departments or by applying to municipal departments should consider the fire academy. The Fire Academy will prepare you to start your career through the expertise of knowledgeable and experienced firefighters, fire chiefs, and other fire service professionals.

Academic & Physical Standards

The fire academy is as intense academically as it is physically. Over the course of the academy, using their Firefighter 1 & 2 handbooks - students will be exposed to and complete:

  • 21 Fire Science academic topics
  • 21 quizzes on all major topics
  • 3 cumulative written exams
  • 3 skills based exams

Students that fail more than 2 Exams or Skills tests will be removed from the academy.

Fire service professionals have tremendous physical demands placed on them during their careers. But the knowledge and mental fortitude required to be successful in the fire service is great as well.

  • Proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Fire Ground Communications
  • Forcible Entry
  • Search and Rescue
  • Water Supply
  • Prevention and Preparedness

PPSC's Fire Academy is one of the most physically demanding training programs in the region. Graduates of the academy will understand and be prepared to face the challenges of working in the fire service.

Apart from its rigorous academic standards, prospective cadets should be aware of the physical demands of the program before considering joining the academy.

  • Able to wear 85 lbs. of gear
  • Carrying and lifting 200 lbs
  • Working in hot environments
  • Eye-hand coordination
  • Crawling and Balancing

Success and the ability to have a robust career in the fire service is our goal for all incoming cadets of the Fire Academy. However, those considering the academy must understand that the physical requirements of life in the fire service can be both grueling and can limit some in their ability to perform required tasks.

Knowing the Requirements is Key

Understanding physical requirements, and being aware of disqualifying physical characteristics is important for any prospective student.

For questions regarding physical considerations, be sure to contact the Fire Science Technology department.
